How to edit UGC videos that convert
Good UGC editing is mostly subtraction: the best take of each line, nothing slow, and the point made in the first second. Here is the process professional UGC editors follow, step by step.
1. Record more than you need
Film every line two or three times, and keep recording through the mistakes. More takes give the edit more to choose from. A clean restart is always better than pushing through a stumble.
Record a few alternative openings too. The hook is the most important line in the video and the one most worth having options for.
2. Pick the best take of every line
Go through the recording line by line and keep the version with the most energy and the fewest fillers, restarts and pauses. Don’t just keep the last take out of habit. The first one is often the most natural.
3. Open with the hook
The first one to three seconds decide whether anyone watches the rest. Lead with the most surprising, specific or relatable line, even if it was not the first thing you said. A short on-screen text hook that restates it helps viewers who start with the sound off.
4. Cut the dead air
Remove pauses, “um”s, false starts and throat-clears. Cut between words, not through them, so the audio never clips mid-syllable. Keep a pause only when it is doing a job: a reaction, a beat before a punchline, or time to read something on screen.
5. Frame it for 9:16
Crop to 1080×1920 and keep the speaker’s face in the upper-middle of the frame. If you show a product, the crop should follow it. Keep text and faces out of the bottom fifth and the right edge, where the platform’s buttons and captions sit.
6. Punch in on emphasis, sparingly
A quick zoom on a key word adds rhythm and hides jump cuts. Three or four per 30 seconds is plenty. Any more and it starts to feel like an effect instead of emphasis.
7. Caption every word
Many viewers scroll with the sound off, so burned-in captions are not optional. Word-by-word highlighting keeps attention on the line. Use a bold, high-contrast style, keep lines short, and place them clear of the platform UI.
8. Level the audio and export
Normalise loudness so the video is not quieter than the ones around it in the feed. Around -16 LUFS works well on phones. Export H.264 MP4 at 1080×1920 and 30 fps.
Doing it by hand vs. with CutUGC
Every step above is what CutUGC does automatically. It watches the full recording, picks takes, writes the hook, cuts, crops, zooms, captions and levels the audio, then leaves every decision editable. A fifteen-minute raw recording becomes a finished short in a few minutes instead of an hour on a timeline.
Questions
How long should a UGC video be?
Most UGC ads and organic shorts land between 15 and 45 seconds. Shorter usually holds attention better. Go longer only when every line earns its place.
What resolution and aspect ratio should UGC be?
Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920. That fills the screen on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Should UGC look polished?
Tight, not glossy. Viewers expect a real person on a phone camera. What they will not sit through is slow pacing, so cut hard but keep the look natural.
